About this Course
The two day Dashboard Design and Distribution course walks through the setup of a dashboard and all of the related elements using Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007. Company and business requirements are presented to students with assumptions, offering a discussion on how to prepare for an implementation. As part of class deliverables, students create a data source on an existing cube, build key performance indicators (KPIs) and a related scorecard, design reports, and finalize all elements in a dashboard. Administration and security are discussed, and the deployed dashboard is viewed through Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Prerequisites
Before attending this course, students must have:
  • An understanding of their organization’s business practices.
  • An understanding of basic financial and accounting terminology.
  • Analytical and technical skills.
  • Experience with their company’s financial analysis process or requirements.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, Excel Services, MDX, and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server is highly recommended.

Module 1: Overview and Demonstration
This module gives students a general overview of business intelligence, as well as the Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 Monitoring and Analytics offering. The monitoring architecture, along with key features and a demonstration is also discussed.

Module 2: Adventure Works
This module introduces students to a fictitious company, with a company profile and business requirements. Project scoping is discussed, and an implementation roadmap is provided to show the high level steps required for the class solution.

Module 3: Dashboard Designer
In this module, students connect to Dashboard Designer and review the workspace layout. Navigation, shortcuts, and editing options are reviewed.

Module 4: Data Sources
This module has students review the different data source types and step through creating a multidimensional a data source. Students review the creation, properties, and time associated with data sources. The final data source is published to the server.

Module 5: Indicators
This module reviews predefined and user-defined indicators and their common use. Students review the two types of indicators, centered and standard. Indicators are created and students step through a lab to create a custom defined indicator.

Module 6: Key Performance Indicators
This module reviews the metrics and properties of key performance indicators (KPIs). Students create an operating expenses KPI and modify number formats, data mappings, and calculations settings for each metric. Thresholds and indicators, associated with target metrics are also defined. Calculation Settings and the placement of the KPI within a scorecard hierarchy is discussed, showing the results of a sample scorecard. The operating expenses KPI is added to a scorecard and the display is previewed. SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) is launched to review existing Analysis Services KPIs within the cube. Students step through creating a Revenue KPI in Dashboard Designer, which references and leverages the cube KPI. The Revenue KPI is applied in a scorecard later in the training.

Module 7: Scorecards
This module reviews scorecard templates and categories, working with the elements on a scorecard. Students step through the creation and modification of a scorecard. KPIs are modified to display the results based on business requirements.

Module 10: Dashboard Design Continued
